Highlights

Traditional highlights are when sections of hair are woven and lightened from the root through to the ends leaving some natural hair in between. Specific sectioning techniques are used to make sure hair is evenly highlighted so it doesn’t have a streaky result. The woven sections of hair are usually folded into foils to keep them isolated from the other hair.

Balayage

Balayage is a hair highlight that uses a free hand technique to paint the bleach straight on the hair, producing a gradient effect. The transitions between dark and light will be much longer and natural looking. The Balayage pieces should be very close and soft at the root leading to a thicker highlight at the ends of the hair. The word Balayage is derived from a French word, meaning to "sweep" or "paint," and the technique results in a soft, natural looks which are normally found in children's hair.

Ombre and sombre

Ombre and somber (short for subtle ombre) use balayage or highlight foils to lighten the hair starting mid-head, instead of at the roots. The resulting effect is like having several months of hair growth suited to enhance your face. Perfect for low maintenance customers because it only needs to be updated every few months. If you desire to return to a natural color, a simple cut of the lightened ends will do. Sombre goes a level or two lighter than the Ombre which is generally more striking.

The difference between ombre and balayage is that ombre results in overall different hair color at the ends compared to the roots, whereas with balayage, the ends will have natural hair color peeking through.
